How to choose a five axle car? 6X4 two axle suspension or 4X2 three axle suspension?

Although both are five-axle vehicles, there is a gap in the total mass of vehicles and goods. According to the new regulations of GB1589, articulated trailers for 5-axle vehicles are divided into 4X2 tractor three-axle trailers, 6X2 tractor two-axle trailers, and 6X4 tractor two-axle trailers. The total weight of 4X2 tractor three-axle trailers is limited to 42 tons, while the maximum total weight of 6X4 and 6X2 tractor two-axle trailers is 43 tons, with a difference of one ton between the two.

Although the maximum total weight of a 6X4 and 6X2 tractor two-axle trailer is 43 tons, when the 4X2 tractor three-axle trailer is empty, the self weight of the 4X2 tractor three-axle trailer is even lighter, and the actual load capacity can even be close to 1-2 tons more than the 6X4 and 6X2 tractor two-axle trailer. This is a good explanation for the current mode in which many express and express companies are starting to comprehensively update their vehicles to 4X2 tractors and three axle trailers.

The second issue is fuel economy. If the power chain data of 6X4 tractor and 4X2 tractor are basically the same under the same plain high-speed conditions, then 4X2 tractor undoubtedly has better fuel economy under long-distance and long-term transportation conditions. Compared to the 6X4 model, the 4X2 model lacks a set of drive wheels, transmission shafts, and various planetary gear components. Power only needs to be output to a set of transmission shafts to drive the vehicle forward. The fewer components and single drive characteristics obviously contribute more to fuel consumption.

If it is between the 6X2 and 4X2 models, the 4X2 model also has better fuel economy. Although the 6X2 main vehicle does not have a drive shaft or other components, an additional set of follower wheels will invisibly increase the ground area of the tires, forming rolling resistance. Although the fuel consumption gap is not as exaggerated as the difference between the 6X4 and 4X2 models, from the perspective of physical structural characteristics, the 6X2 model still does not perform as well as the 4X2 model in terms of fuel consumption.
